Winter is for working hard; summer is for playing hard. From the Bahamas to Amsterdam, we have several m
ost appealing summer vacation spots for you to choose from.
The Bahamas
While there is a risk of getting rained on during hurricane season, June generally sees mild weather, fewer cr
owds and significantly lower prices. While some resorts in the Out Islands may close, New Providence and Par
adise Island remain open year-round. It’s a good choice for families looking for a taste of relaxing island livin
g.
Mackinac Island, MI
Mackinac Island, 20 minutes by boat from either the Upper or Lower Peninsula of Michigan, comes alive on s
ummer weekends. Most of its roughly 4 square miles is parkland, suitable for hiking and cycling. Be sure to take in
the beautiful architecture―Victorian cottages that date back to just after the Civil War. You can have a taste of ti
mes gone by; cars were banned more than a hundred years ago, and horse-drawn carriages are still used t
o get around today.
Amsterdam
Summer is the ideal time to visit this city. The gray skies have lifted, festivals abound and events to enjoy in
clude the Open Garden Days, when visitors can peek into the private gardens behind the beautiful houses that line
the famous canals. You can experience urban adventure, crossing Amsterdam’s thousands of bridges and water
ways by bike and by boat in search of the perfect brown cafe.
Ocean City, MD
This East Coast beach town is best known for its boardwalk, which is known for old-school amusement rides.
Cycling in the town is also a great pleasure. Grab your wallets and feast on hard-shelled crabs at Hooper’s crab h
ouse or drink in the sunset with a local beer in hand from Fager’s Island Restaurant & Bar’s large bayfront decks. Par

Ms. McIntyre, 38, worked as a publisher. She suffered brain cancer and her health got worse despite some
medical treatment. But she realized that in a way, she was luckier than some other people. She had insurance to
help pay for her medical care. But Ms. McIntyre and her husband, Mr. Gregory, knew that many people with c
ancer face tough decisions because of the costs of medical care and wind up owing far more than they can pay.
Though her health was failing, Ms. McIntyre decided to help pay off the medical debts of as many people as s
he possibly could. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to w
orking to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. The group can pay off medical bills for about 100 times les

onations are still coming in. By November 22, 2023, Ms. McIntyre’s web page had raised over $627,000, or en
ough money to pay off about $60 million in medical debts.
Mr. Gregory planned a special event in December to celebrate Ms. McIntyre’s life and to announce how

The Miyun Reservoir (水库) near Beijing plays an important role in providing water to the capital. But not m
any people know this major project was actually designed by a group of university students as their graduation pro
ject. In 1959, under Jiang Nanxiang, the then headmaster of Tsinghua University, who encouraged his students to co
mbine theory with practice, students from the Department of Hydraulic Engineering set about the project.
This is one of the stories told in the new season of Century Masters, which focuses on 11 noted educators, a
mong them Peking University head Cai Yuanpei, promoter of mass education Tao Xingzhi and physical ed
ucation advocate Jiang Nanxiang, which aired on China Education Television in March, 2024.
Produced by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Century Masters is dedicated to people re
nowned for their mastery in different areas. Earlier seasons focused on famous artists, architects and writers. Ac
cording to Chen Hong, the general director for the series, the new season seeks to preserve and protect the educ
ational practices, ideas and progress of the subjects, and nurture young people in the process. “We want to crystal
lize (使结晶) the wisdom and sweat of countless educators, a precious heritage for future generations, and open a
window to showcase the country’s progress. Many of them also made great achievements in other areas. This seri
es, however, focuses on their contributions to education,” says Chen.
Unlike artists who produce physical creations, the contributions of educators are often theoretical, and so are di
fficult to show visually. To deal with this, the series brought the educators to life by illustrating their ideas thr
ough snapshots (快照) of their work and life. The two episodes about Ma Yuehan, a pioneer in advocating for phys
ical education at Tsinghua University, explore his habit of regular exercise maintained since childhood, his partici
pation in national and international competitions at university, and the way in which he benefited from being in
good health.
28. What do we know about the Miyun Reservoir from the passage
A. It was finished in the year 1959.
B. Its historical importance has not been recognized.
C. It was designed by a headmaster of Tsinghua University.
D. It is a product of Tsinghua University’s teaching philosophy.
29. What purpose does the new season of Century Masters serve
A. To introduce Chinese experts of all fields.
B. To dig into the all-around achievements of great educators.
C. To call upon young people to contribute to Chinese education.
D. To record the educational practices and ideas of noted educators.
30. Why does the author mention the episodes of Ma Yuehan in paragraph 4
A. To highlight his educational contribution. B. To prove the importance of physical education.
C. To serve as an example of the practice above. D. To show his achievement in physical competitions.
31. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Education in Tsinghua University B. Heroes of Education in Century Masters

It’s commonly acknowledged that our lives are ruled by algorithms (算法), but have we really collectively u
nderstood how they have transformed our culture and personality
In Filterworld: How algorithms flattened culture, Kyle Chayka argues convincingly that the rise of a
lgorithm-driven feeds, used everywhere online from Instagram to Spotify, has led to a more uniform culture. Our ta
stes and desires increasingly don’t belong to us, but to algorithms that are designed to keep people engaged at all cos
ts. If the collection of our tastes truly shapes our entire personality, then this loss is more psychologically dam
aging than it first appears. Aimlessly scrolling (滚屏) through Netflix or TikTok may seem harmless, but over days,
months or years, we lose touch with what we like and enjoy.
Taste-making algorithms are inescapable. Chayka shows this by working through all corners of life: what we
wear (TikTok), where we eat (Google Maps), music we listen to (Spotify), even who we date or marry (Tinder). T
his universe of algorithm-driven decisions has society-wide implications: “It extends to influence our physical sp
aces, our cities, and the routes we move through… flattening them in turn.” No one gets out of the Filterworld unt
ouched.
If you’re lucky enough not to need any sort of algorithm-based system for your work, then you have the o
ption to step back from algorithms for a while. But if your friend suggests a film recommended on Twitter or you fe
el the need to buy those shoes suddenly everyone has started wearing after social media advertisements, what are
you to do It all feels fruitless.
This Filterworld may be inescapable, but there is hope. You can start by engaging more with the media you d
o choose to consume. This could mean reading up about a film you watched or paying artists you like directly. Ev
en the thoughtful act of recommending an album to a friend is more rewarding than a random TikTok feed. As Cha
yka says, resistance to algorithms “requires an act of willpower, a choice to move through the world in a differ
ent way”.
32. What is Kyle Chayka’s opinion on algorithms
A. They improve our tastes. B. They make our cultures more alike.
C. They help identify our personality. D. They contribute to psychological problems.
33. What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The society with advanced technology. B. The world without social media platforms.
C. The network of algorithm-driven decisions. D. The community free from algorithmic influence.
34. Which of the following is a way to resist the impact of algorithms
A. Limiting the use of social media platforms. B. Making choices based on friends’ suggestions.
C. Getting more involved with the selected media. D. Disconnecting from social media advertisements.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The Secret of Algorithms B. Algorithms: Cultural Takeover
C. The Rise of Digital Platforms D. Algorithms: Stimulating Creativity

If your partner gets down on one knee to propose, or you get a call with the job offer, your reaction might be t
o shout it from the rooftops. But new research suggests that keeping good news a secret before telling someone el
se could make people feel more energized.
“Decades of research on keeping secrets suggest it is bad for our well-being. However, this work has only e
xamined keeping secrets that have negative effects for our lives. Is secrecy bad for our well-being or do the ne
gative effects of keeping secrets tend to originate from keeping negative secrets ” asked lead researcher of the late
st research Michael Slepian, PhD, a professor of business at Columbia University.
In the experiment, some participants were asked to reflect on the good news they kept secret, while others r
eflected on good news that was not secret, and then rated how energized the news made them feel and whether th
ey intended to share the news with someone else. The researchers found that the participants who reflected on the
ir positive secrets reported feeling more energized than the participants who thought about their good news that was
not secret.
“The research gives subtle differences to our understanding of the science of secrets. Negative secrets tend to d
eplete us and have also been linked to anxiety and depression. Positive secrets, however, seem to have an en
ergizing effect and make people alive. One factor could be that people often have different motivations for kee
ping good news to themselves. Those with positive secrets were much more likely to keep quiet for internal reas
ons, not because they felt any outside pressures.
“People sometimes go to great lengths to plan revealing a positive secret to make it all the more exciting.
This kind of surprise can be extremely enjoyable, but surprise is the most fleeting (短暂的) of our emotions,”
Slepian said. “Having extra time—days, weeks or even longer—to imagine the joyful surprise on another person’s f
ace allows us more time with this exciting moment, even if only in our own minds.”
36. What did Michael Slepian think of the previous research on secrecy
A. It’s one-sided. B. It’s pointless. C. It’s convincing. D. It’s pioneering.
37. Why were some participants more energized in the experiment
A.They were free from secrets. B. They were optimistic and cheerful.
C. They had shared good news with others. D. They had unrevealed positive secrets.
38. What does the underlined word “deplete” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Panic. B. Exhaust. C. Confuse. D. Spoil.
39. According to the last paragraph, what did Slepian suggest readers do
A. Never reveal a secret casually. B. Let your imagination run wild.
C. Be creative when surprising others. D. Delay sharing a positive secret.

Global warming is not only bringing rising sea levels and extreme weather events but also causing a
growing wave of climate anxiety around the world. An international study found nearly six in ten people were
very worried about climate change, while the young appeared to be particularly badly influenced. 40 Here
are some effective ways to help deal with your feelings.
41 Not all information on the Internet is true, and you could be receiving misinformation. Even if you
stick to trusted sources, too much information may only worsen your feelings. Try to set a time limit for checking
climate related content to avoid making your anxiety worse.
It is important to be aware of your own limitations. You alone can’t stop or undo climate change, so you
needn’t place the responsibility on yourself. 42 Joining a group of like-minded people to make a difference
is a good way to get started and help you feel better.
Talk therapy (疗法) provides you with a chance to discuss your anxiety about climate issues. A good
therapist will address your negative emotions and thoughts about the environment in your conversations. 43
Positive changes have taken place at personal, community, and worldwide levels. And there is no reason to believe
that they won’t continue, especially with your help. You can discover means to influence others with your own
positive attitude. 44 Take on whatever role you feel comfortable with and remember to focus on your
mental health on whatever path you choose.
A. Staying in natural green spaces can help reduce stress.
B. Organize related activities to educate people around you.
C. However, you can always find ways to contribute positively.
D. The UN has made a list of blogs and other resources about climate issues.
E. Reduce your time spent online, especially on sources that are not trustworthy.
F. Such a professional will recognize your feelings and work with you to manage them.
G. So consider taking care of your mental well-being if you are struggling with the issue.
