I was visiting my parents in 2003 when my mom came out of their room with a puzzled look on her face. She’
d been listening to the radio and heard an interview with a best-selling author of young adult fantasy novels (奇幻
小说). The woman’s name was TamoraPierce, the same as a young student my mom had taught nearly four
decades before.
The Internet should be able to tell us. I found the author’s website quickly. She was a popular writer of books.
I clicked on the biography link to scan for references to Burlingame Junior High, where my mom had worked, and
my heart began to race when I spotted it at the bottom of the first section. Here was confirmation that my mother
had taught a now-famous writer!
But my eyes came to a stop reading the next paragraph, in which Pierce described writing her first fiction as a
sixth grader. “The next year, as I was creating my own stories, my English teacher, Mrs. Jacobson, introduced me
to theLord of the Rings trilogyby J.R.R. Tolkien,”the biography (传记) read. “I got hooked on fantasy, and then
on science fiction, and both made their way into my stories.” My mother’s name was Mary Jacobson.
Withindays, my dad had checked out all the TamoraPierce books at the local library, and in one we found
another surprise: a 1998 novel, which was dedicated (题献词) to “the teacher who shaped my life”. The teacher
was Mary Jacobson. The dedication concluded, “A great teacher is above all other treasures.”
This story made me see my mom differently. Weknew she was a teacher, but we had no idea what kind of
第 5页/共 12页
teacher she had been. She was just 24 when she taught Pierce. Until 2011,when she passed away, we did know
who she was.

C. Caring and demanding.D. Considerate and intelligent.
27. What’s the suitable title of the passage
A. Pierce: From a Student Writerto a Fantasy Queen
B. My Mother: A Creator of Well-knownWriters

We’veall experienced it: Youhave important information you need to remember, and you’ll do anything it
takes to keep it at the forefront of your brain. In this situation, rote memorization (死记硬背) may be your best—
or even your only—option.
Rote memorization is when we repeat a piece of information until we remember it. One great example of it is
the alphabet (字母表). When we are little, we don’t necessarily understand that our language is composed of the
letters A to Z. But we memorize them in a specific order because we are taught to, and then we know the alphabet.
There are situations in which rote memorization can be helpful. “Rote memorization can be a useful learning
tool in some situations, but its effectiveness depends on the type of information being learned and how it is applied,”
says Dr. Aldrich Chan, neuropsychologist. He tells us that rote memorization helps us quickly recall basic facts and
information such as vocabulary words or math formulas (公式). This can be particularly helpful in situations where
immediate access to information is required, like during exams.
The act of memorizing through repetition also has its downsides. Chan notes that “rote memorization often
does not promote a deep understanding of the material. Learners may be able to memorize facts or information
第 6页/共 12页
without truly understanding their meaning or significance.” On the other hand, he explains that “meaningful
learning focuses on understanding the fundamental concepts and principles, encouraging critical thinking, and
promoting the integration (整合) of knowledge into broader contexts. Meaningful learning promotes long-term
memory and the ability to apply knowledge flexibly.”
However, both rote memorization and meaningful learning have their place. The most important to keep in
mind is that they are different, and rote memorization cannot stand in as an alternative to actual learning.
Memorizing something doesn’t mean you understand it, and it doesn’t mean you can do anything with it.
28. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1
A. By giving an example.B. By providing a definition.
C. By creating a scene.D. By making a comparison.
29. Why does the author mention the alphabet in paragraph 2
A. Toshow how rote memorization works.B. Tostress why learning in order is important.
C. Toinstruct us how to learn the alphabet.D. Tointroduce the disadvantages of repetition.
30. What can we learn about rote memorization from Dr. Aldrich Chan
A. It focuses on the concepts and principles.B. It helps promote a meaningful understanding.
C. It serves as useful tool for test preparation.D. It keeps knowledge in people's brain for long.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards rote memorization
A. Critical.B. Objective.C. Uninterested.D. Supportive.

In 1921, Karel apek’s play R. U. R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots had its first public performance in Prague,
and was translated into English the following year. He needed a name for the factory produced humanoid workers
of the story, and was thinking ofcoiningsomething based on the word “labour”. But his brother Josef suggested an
old Czech word for “forcedlabour”, robota. And the word “robot” was born.
If the apeks had known English, they might have chosen one of the words with relevant senses that were
already in the language. “Automaton” had been available since the 17th century and “android” since the 18th. But
the clear sound of “robot” seemed to capture the public imagination, because within five years it was being used
not only for intelligent artificial beings but for any machine capable of carrying out a complex set of movements.
In science fictions(小说), the word took on new life, with writers such as Isaac Asimov writing well-regarded
novels in which robots played a central role. It was these writers who first shortened “robot”to“bot”, but none of
them could have expected the explosion of usages which arrived in the 1990s, as the shortened word came to be
第 7页/共 12页
adopted in computing. Today,a bot is any piece of software that runs an automated task, such as in searching the
Internet or playing computer games. It has also become a suffix(后缀), with the function of the“bot”explained in
the other part of the word, as in searchbot, infobot, spybot and warbot.
As early as 1923, George Bernard Shaw had applied the word “robot” to people who act automatically,
without thinking or emotion, usually because of the repetitive work they have to do. Now anyone having
automaton-like behaviour risks attracting the label. A movie star called Samantha who has taken on the same type
of character too many times might have her roles described as “Samanthabots.” And in 2009 “Obamabots”
arrived-people who support Barack Obama without really knowing anything about him.
32. What does the underlined word “coining” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Delivering.B. Predicting.C. Inventing.D. Recommending.
33. How did the word “robot” develop in the 1990s
A. It was no longer linked with machines.B. It was gradually replaced by “android”.
C. It was shortened and used in computing.D. It was only adopted in well-regarded novels.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The usage of “robot” in different situations.
B. The impact of “robot” on people’s behaviour.
C. The popularity of “robot” among movie stars.
D. The connection of “robot” with public figures.
35. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A writer’s biography.B. A science fiction.
C. A technology newspaper.D. A language encyclopedia.

For most people, adopting a pet is one of the best decisions that they can ever make in their lives. In addition
to giving an animal a permanent (永久的) home and a loving family, the owner will find the company of a pet
brings more happiness than expected.
For someone like Maria Luiza Valcazara, having a pet was very suitable. She was all alone after moving to a
new apartment in Brazil, and her solitary (独居的) life made her feel lonely.
So when she found a cute black puppy named Chips, she knew she had to take him home. Maria thought that
Chips would be able to fill the emptiness that she had been experiencing from living all alone.
第 11页/共 12页
Maria was right. Once she took the puppy home, they immediately bonded. However, as Maria had to work
during the day, she was worried about leaving Chips home alone in her apartment. She was also worried that his
crying would upset her neighbors.
One night, when she returned home, she considered her fears were confirmed. There, outside her door, was a
package with a folded note attached to it.
Marin knew that she was in trouble. She hoped that she would not be evicted (驱逐) from her new apartment
because of Chips. She loved Chips so much, and she was afraid that she might have to get rid of him because he
made too much noise whenever she was away. Maria was scared and wondered who could have left it at the door
because she had little contact with the people in the building.
However, when she noticed the names on the folded note, she found that it wasn't addressed to her but to her
dog, Chips, and that it was “written” by another dog named Corote. Maria opened the package first and found a few
toys for pets.
