M: Would you like some milk or tea
W: Tea, please. I’d like tea with nothing in it.
M: What are you going to do this evening
W: I had planned to watch TV, but my uncle called to have dinner. So I have to cook now.
W: Daddy, How soon shall we leave for Hong Kong for a nice holiday
M: The day after tomorrow. Now it’s only Wednesday.
M: What beautiful chopsticks! Are they made of steel
W: No, they are made of silver. So they cost too much.
M: I’d like to take a taxi to the West Lake about 3 kilometers away. How much will it be
W: 10 yuan for three kilometers, and one more yuan for oil.
W: Hello, Peter. I’ve got some good news for you.
M: What’s it
W: A foreign lady will come to our English classes.
M: Really When will she come
W: Tomorrow morning.
M: What country is she from
W: Canada. She is from an exchange program. While she is in China, a Chinese teacher will be in Canada.
M: Good. We are from the same country. What does she come for
W: She wants to see what life in China is like. Would you like to see her
M: Yes, I’d like to. And I want to tell her what I’ve heard and seen here.
M: Can I help you
W: Yes. I’d like to change this coat.
M: What’s wrong with it
W: It’s the wrong size. I wear Size 11, but it’s Size 9.
M: Didn’t you try it on when you bought it
W: The coat is a gift from my sister. She didn’t know how tall I am. We haven’t seen each other for three years.
M: OK. We can change it for you. But we don’t have this color.
W: What color do you have then
M: Yellow, red and blue.
W: Oh, red is my favorite.
Good day! I’m Michal, and I’m a science teacher at the Darwin School of Distance Education. We teach students aged 11-18. In many ways, teaching at a distance high school is just like teaching at a normal high school. We have to read and do a lot of homework, which the students hand in by mail.
The biggest difference, I think, is the classroom. It’s a small room and there’s nobody in it, except me. The other difference is that I give the classroom and do experiments in front of a camera. It seems strange at first, but it’s easier than teaching in front of a class of thirty kids. Another difference—and this is the most difficult thing for me—is that I can’t see any of the students. They can see me, but I can’t see them, so I don’t know if they are interested or bored by the lesson. But I can hear them, so I usually ask them questions during the lesson to make sure they’re listening! Actually, most of my students are great---they listen carefully to the lessons, and they’re very good at working by themselves. Sometimes, we have problems with one or two students They don’t do their coursework, but this doesn’t happen very often. In fact, students at a school of distance education work hard and often get good results—better than a lot of students at a regular school.

Dear Professor Nail,
I am Wang Ming from Huyang Middle School. I wish to get an opportunity to study at TIS.
Like many other students, I enjoy doing sports, but math and science are my favorite. I like Chinese, English and as well. I have won several prizes in various competitions, including a second prize in an international math competition.
I have joined in one-month-tour-study program in the US and learned a lot about Canadian culture and I have made many friends there. So TIS is my first choice to study abroad.
