A three-year-old girl gets IQ higher than Einstein A Britain’s child called Ophelia Morgan-Dew has an IQ higher than Albert Einstein’s and Stephen Hawking’s at the age of just three. Her 171 score is 11 better than physicists Einstein and Hawking, who came up with the theories on relativity (相对论) and black holes. “She began to say colors, letters and numbers very soon, compared to most children,” said his mother, Natalie Morgan, 31. The little girl, who expressed her first word at eight months old and at two repeated the alphabet (字母表), can even remember events that happened before the year. Natalie took her daughter to experts after realizing she was so bright. The child is the UK’s youngest member of high IQ society Mensa and is in the top 0.03 percent of the population according to brain power. From: https://vaaju.com/mexicoeng (?https:?/??/?vaaju.com?/?mexicoeng?) What’s life like in the future? Getting from here to there. Most people agree that our means of transportation will be faster and safer in the future. Hypersonic (超音速的) planes will fly five times faster than the speed of sound. Computers will pilot our planes and drive our cars for us. Some experts think we may use personal jetpack systems for individual travel in the air. Others think we might have cars that can fly or navigate (航行) under the water. What do you think? Never lose anything again. Some scientists think everyone and everything will have a special GPS (Global Positioning System) chip (全球定位系统芯片) inside. This special computer chip can tell a satellite high in the sky where a person or an object is at any time. This means you could always find your dog or your bike. Let the robots do it. Today’s robots look more like odd boxes or sculptures moving around, and they don’t seem like something you would want at home. But the robots of the future will be very welcome, such as they will cook your meals, wash your dishes, do your laundry, and clean your home. Because you won’t be spending much time cleaning your house, you’ll have a lot more free time. We may have these robots in the next 20 or 25 years. Goodbye money. Will money as we know disappear? In the future, people will use plastic “smart” cards to buy everything they need. The card will know how much money a person has. It will contain a voice print, a photo, and personal information about the owner so that no one else can use it. A The clock struck eleven at night. The whole house was quiet. A tall rocket (火箭) will take you into space. The rocket flies a long way to a space station. You will stop there for a short time. Then a big spaceship will take you to the Moon. About 3 days later, the spaceship slowly goes down and lands on the Moon. You are now on the Moon, but you must first put on a spacesuit. The Moon is very hot in the day and very cold at night. If you don’t wear the spacesuit, you can’t live there. You jump out of the spaceship and begin to walk. The things on the Moon are much lighter than those on the Earth. Shall we go to the zoo? Will you play basketball with us? It will be stormy tomorrow. I’m going to buy a computer this year. Look at the black clouds! It’s going to rain. 注意: 当be going to后接go或come时,通常直接用现在进行时来表示。例如: Where is he going? She’s coming right away. [误] Perhaps people will are able to live on other planets. [正] Perhaps people will be able to live on other planets. 应该用be able to。 2. [误] Perhaps there will be no water and air on the Earth. [正] Perhaps there will be no water or air on the Earth. 3. [误] Perhaps people in different country will all be able to speak the same language. [正] Perhaps people in different countries will all be able to speak the same language. 4. [误] What do you think will happen in ten year’s time? [正] What do you think will happen in ten years’ time? 5. [误] —Let’s make a time box. —That’s funny. [正] —Let’s make a time box. —That’s fun. 6. [误] After ten years, we can open the box and see how have things changed. [正] After ten years, we can open the box and see how things have changed. 7. [误] Perhaps people will eat pills for meals. [正] Perhaps people will take pills for meals. (1) be able to be able to意为“能够、会”,表示做事能力,相当于can。如: I am able to = (can) speak English. 【辨析】 be able to和can都可以表示“能够、会”,但其用法有所不同。 I shall be able to come tomorrow. —Can she play soccer? —Yes, she can. Jim could play ping-pong five years ago. 另外,can 还可以表示允许、可能性,而be able to不能。如: Mooney could be at home. He is full of hope. I gave up hope of going to college when I failed my examinations. We hope to see you tomorrow. I hope you’ll be better soon. I hope / wish to go to college. I hope she can come tomorrow. I wish I could fly to the Moon. 如: (正) I wish her to leave now. (误) I hope her to leave now. wish可以表示祝愿,但hope不能。如: I wish you health and happiness. Unit 7 In the future What did the man make? Where did he put the machine? H Life in the future The future will be very different from now. I think the life will be much more enjoyable and convenient. In the future, people will be able to eat different food. Maybe there will be apple-oranges or grape-pineapples at that time. The scientists will possibly develop new kinds of fruit or vegetables which are delicious. In the future, people may go to work in a new vehicle. The new vehicle will be able to take people to another place at a great speed. It will be much faster than taking the bus or the underground. That means people won’t have to spend long time in travelling. The global warming is becoming a concern for people at present. I believe the scientists will be able to solve the problem and have new ways to help people protect the environment. The future will have endless possibility. Let’s look forward to it. I think life in the future will be different from the present one. The house will be more intelligent. People will enjoy better life because all the electrical appliances in the house will be controlled by the smart computer. For example, if it is too hot in the house, the air conditioner will be turned on automatically and keep the room cool just before people get home. Furniture will also become smart. The TV will stop people from watching too much TV. The desk will remind us of the writing posture and the plate will tell us if the food on the plate is healthy. What’s more, when people tell the car where to go, the car will design the best route and quickly send people to the destination. Future life will become smarter and we are looking forward to having a more comfortable future! Nowadays, our lives are very convenient because of the Internet. In the future, I believe life will be easier and more comfortable. Perhaps there will be more robots with AI technology, which are just like human’s brain. They will be able to think by themselves and give you what you want. No power? Don’t worry. All the energy they use is from the sun. The cars will also change in the future. A clean renewable resource instead of oil will appear to power the cars. The environment will be greener and greater. I am looking forward to the future life. In my opinion, life in the future will be magical with a lot of futuristic things. There will be no traffic jams, no long queues and no accidents at all. The cars will be driven in the sky. No one is the driver but the car will avoid all the obstacles accurately. The reason why they are so unbelievable is that the cars use solar energy and are remotely operated by the satellite. The AI technology will be improved quickly. Maybe the robots will help their masters in a smart way. They help do the housework and look after babies or pets carefully. I think the life in the future will be full of convenience. I am looking forward to living in the future. I believe that the life will be more interesting and convenient in 20 years’ time. There will be some smart robots at home. They will be able to help people do many things such as cleaning the house and cooking. In the street, we will find lots of people wearing beautiful clothes which will be made of new materials. They will keep people feel cool in summer and feel warm in winter. If people are busy with their work, they will eat pills for meals instead of having food. That will help people save time and keep them healthy. What’s more, it will be easy for people to travel to other planets by spaceship easily, like Jupiter and Mars. I think there will no longer be any books in our school, because the computers will take the place of them. We can get much more information and knowledge from the computer. How wonderful the future life is! Have you ever thought about our life in the future? Maybe not. Besides, the streets will become much cleaner and safe. There will be no traffic accidents in the future. The advanced electronic police can direct traffic on the road. In the future, there won’t be any pollution, because we will plant lots of trees to protect the environment. People live with animals peacefully on the Earth. What’s more, the robots will be used everywhere, helping us do all kinds of work. They can help us cook and clean rooms at regular time. So we will have more free time to do other things. There are many good things waiting for us in our future life. I’m looking forward to the future life. Do we need “smart” uniforms? Do you love your school uniforms? Students always have a lot to say about their school uniforms. Here comes a new question: Do they really need smart uniforms? Eleven schools in China have introduced smart uniforms. There are two chips (芯片) in each uniform’s shoulders. With them, the system can record when the students attend and leave school, or if he falls asleep during classes. The information will be sent to the parents’ smartphones at once. An alarm will ring if a student walks out of school without permission (允许). Each uniform is linked to a student’s face. It is impossible for students to exchange their uniforms. Smart uniforms are designed to protect the safety of students. However, some people worry that students would be tracked (跟踪). The makers of the uniforms say that they respect and protect human rights and that the smart uniform does not track students’ every single move all the time. The schools say, “We choose not to know where the student is after school, but when the student is missing and skipping classes, the uniforms help us know where he or she is.” What do you think of these new uniforms? From: https://www.odditycentral.com What is an English school day like? (I) Our Students Arrive The students start arriving on our upper playground from about 8:45 a.m. Most of our children walk from near by housing estates but some travel to school by car. The children wear a school uniform and carry their homework and packed lunch in a schoolbag. The Start School begins at 8:55 a.m. The duty teacher blows a whistle and the children line up in their class groups. They wait quietly for the teacher to send them to their classrooms. On arriving in their classrooms, the children empty their bags and put their homework in the marking trays / boxes. They hang their bags and coats on the pegs (钉) in the cloakrooms (each class has their own cloakroom). The children then go back into their classrooms. Assembly At 9:10 a.m. the children go to assembly (集合) in our main hall. They sit on the floor in rows with the youngest children at the front and the older children at the back. As the children enter the hall, they listen quietly to the music playing. Each week has a different musical theme and the children are asked to listen out for particular things. What happens in an assembly? In our assemblies the children listen to a story, sing a song and pray. The story is either taken from the Christian Bible or is a story with a moral. The songs we sing are particularly chosen with the children in mind. Some of our songs are sung with the English sign language. To cater (迎合) for the children of different faiths, some of our assemblies do not have a Christian theme. These assemblies are a time for us to gather together to celebrate the achievements of our children and of the school as a whole. Every parent has the right to withdraw (撤走) their child from a school assembly. A To most people of Norway (挪威), skiing is the best way to have fun in winter. Almost everyone can ski. I’ll go with you if you don’t want to go alone. 2. If you drive too fast, you may have an accident. You must stop if the traffic is red. 3. Don’t go and play football if you don’t finish your homework. Please call me if he comes next Sunday. 4. If you heat ice, it turns to water. His words surprised me a lot. (作动词) The two men looked at each other in surprise. (作名词) to one’s surprise使某人吃惊的是(作名词) To their surprise, he was a thief. I was surprised at his answer. I’m very surprised to hear you say that. The news is very surprising. [误] They can eat different located snacks. [正] They can eat different local snacks. [析] 词根locate,可以转换成形容词local,意为“当地的;本地的”;转换成located时用于被动语态结构:be located in / at / on sp. (被安置在……;位于……),相当于lie(s);转换成名词是location,意为“位置”。 2. [误] Where can tourists go to in Shanghai? [正] Where can tourists go in Shanghai? Where can tourists go in Shanghai? 3. [误] Kitty and her classmates have just gone to Shanghai. They have decided to take part in a competition. [正] Kitty and her classmates have just been to Shanghai. They have decided to take part in a competition. [析] have / has gone to sp.意为“去了某地”,还没有回来;而have / has been to sp.意为“去过某地”,已经回来。 4. [误] It’s in Chongming Island. [正] It’s on Chongming Island. 5. [误] It is one of the largest city in the world. [正] It is one of the largest cities in the world. [析] one of ... 如: one of the girls, one of the books。 6. [误] It also known as a “Shopping Paradise”. [正] It is also known as a “Shopping Paradise”. 7. [误] The Maglev brings you to the international airport in about eight minutes. [正] The Maglev takes you to the international airport in about eight minutes. 8. [误] ... so it is convenient travel between Pudong and Puxi. [正] ... so it is convenient to travel between Pudong and Puxi. (7分) One day, a farmer’s donkey (驴) fell into a dry well (井). The poor animal cried for hours before his owner finally found him. The farmer tried hard to pull him out from the well but failed. He felt very sorry for the donkey but after carefully thinking, he decided that he wouldn’t save the donkey because the donkey was too old and he didn’t want to waste more time to save him. So he invited his neighbours to help him bury (埋葬) the old donkey in the well so that it would make him end his pain. Hearing many people coming to help, the old donkey was excited at first. As they began to scoop the dirt into the well with shovels (铲子), he soon realized what was happening. He felt very upset and cried sadly again. As the farmer and his neighbours continued throwing the dirt on his back, he suddenly had a good idea. When the farmer finally looked down into the well, he was surprised at what he saw: every time the dirt landed on his back, he would shake it off and take a step up! Soon, everyone was surprised when the donkey stepped proudly over the well and ran away quickly! It seemed that it would bury him at first, but it actually helped him later. That is life! Just like the donkey, life is going to throw dirt on us, all kinds of dirt. As long as (只要) we face our problems in an active way, each dirt is like a stepping stone with which we get out of the deepest wells. Therefore, never stop and never give up.
