    British History
The British Isles have a rich history going back thousands of years. Unfortunately few of us in Britain really know much about our history. Retrospectively I think there must have been something radically flawed with history as it is taught in out schools as our history is fascinating.
For this history guide, we shall divide the period of British history into four main chunks, and each of these four main chunks then subdivided into bite sized chapters that try to explain the way that things happened
History is an interweaving of events and people, and its not just about kings and queens, its about ordinary people and how events influenced them, and on occasions how they influenced events.
Also one has to realise that Britain is not one nation, but a hodge podge of different peoples who tend to remain distinct in spite of a millenium or more of intermarriage. I have therefore put in separate chapters on Ireland, Scotland and Wales, each with its own history
4000 BC to 1066, the Dawn of Civilisation to the Norman Conquest 4000 to 1500 BC stone age man, the first farmers, Stonehenge

    1. From the stomach the disease attacked the body quickly and soon the affected person was dead. (P2)
How was the televised debate last night
—Super! Rarely ______ so much media attention. (2007
    A. a debate attracted B. did a debate attract
    C. a debate did attract D. attracted a debate
    2. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. (P2)
The building around the corner caught fire last night. The police are now ______ the matter.
    A. seeing through B. working out
    C. looking into D. watching over
    【简析】 see through看穿、识破;work out 锻炼、训练; look into调查、观察;watch over看守、监视。
    3. A woman, who had moved away from Broad Street, liked the water so much that she had had it delivered from the pump to her house every day. (P3)

    Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein (German: IPA: [?alb?t ?a??n?ta??n] (Audio file) (help·info); English: IPA: /??lb?t ?a?nsta?n/) (March 14, 1879 – April 18, 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist. He is best known for his theory of relativity and specifically mass–energy equivalence, E = mc2. Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect."[1]
Einstein’s many contributions to physics include his special theory of relativity, which reconciled mechanics with electromagnetism, and his general theory of relativity, which extended the principle of relativity to non-uniform motion, creating a new theory of gravitation. His other contributions include relativistic cosmology, capillary action, critical opalescence, classical problems of statistical mechanics and their application to quantum theory, an explanation of the Brownian movement of molecules, atomic transition probabilities, the quantum theory of a monatomic gas, thermal properties of light with low radiation density (which laid the foundation for the photon theory), a theory of radiation including stimulated emission, the conception of a unified field theory, and the geometrization of physics.

    Jane Goodall
Jane Goodall, a noted humanitarian (人道主义者) and environmentalist, has spent many years observing the behaviour of chimpanzees in their native habitat.
Jane Goodall was born on, 3rd April, 1934 in London, England. Her childhood ambition (抱负) was to spend time with animals in the wild. In particular, she was drawn to the African continent and the dream of seeing wild animals in their native habitat. It was an unusual ambition for a girl at the time, but it was an ambition supported by her parents, especially her mother. In 1956, Jane, jumped at the opportunity to travel to a friend’s farm in Kenya.
It was in Kenya that Jane met Dr. Louis S. B. Leakey. In 1960, Leakey and Jane began an important study of wild chimpanzees there. Responding to their great patience and perseverance (坚持不懈), the chimpanzees slowly showed some fascinating habits to the group. These included meat eating. Also, Jane saw chimpanzees making a “tool” out of tree bark (树皮). This was an important discovery because at the time, it was thought only humans made tools.

    A Letter to Girlfriend
One day a young man was writing a letter to his girl friend that lived just a few miles away in a nearby town. Among other things, he was telling her how much he loved her and how wonderful he thought she was. The more he wrote the more poetic he became. Finally, he said that in order to be with her he would suffer the greatest difficulties, he would face the greatest dangers that anyone could imagine. In fact, to spend only one minute with her, he would climb the highest mountain in the world, he would swim across the widest river, he would enter the deepest forest and with his bare hands fight against the fiercest animals.
He finished the letter, signed his name, and then suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to mention something quite important. So, in a postscript below his name, he added: “By the way I’ll be over to see you on Wednesday night—if it doesn’t rain.”

The Ig Nobel Prizes praise research that makes you laugh and then think. The winners are allowed to make a one-minute speech with time kept by an eight-year-old! Every year, in Harvard’s Sanders Theatre, people watch the winners step forward to accept their prizes. These are physically handed out by real Nobel laureates (获得者). Let’s have a look at some of them.
    The Empty Bladder (膀胱) Experiment
Four researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology found that animals above 3 kg empty their bladders in about 21 seconds. What is the purpose of this study? The researchers hope this will help solve urinary (泌尿的) problems in animals.
    The Science of Eggs
A team of Australian scientists managed to get hard-boiled egg whites to become raw again. While it sounds silly, this research could have a serious influence on cancer (癌症) research.
    The Fascination with Animals
Charles Foster and Thomas Thwaites from the UK shared the 2016 Ig Nobel Prize in Biology. Thomas chose to live like a goat and wrote about his experience in “GoatMan: How I Took a Holiday from Being Human”. Charles, on the other hand, spent some time in the wild, trying out the lives of many animals. He felt it gave him a chance to explore the world around us with more of our senses.
    Colors & Horseflies
A team from Hungary, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland won the 2016 Ig Nobel Prize in Physics. They studied why horseflies have less interest in white-haired horses. The team used handmade horses covered in glue. They found that dark colors attracted more flies because of how sunlight reflected (反射) off them. To the food searchers, it was a sign of food. This finding could explain the white coats of zebras too.
    21. Who give the Ig Nobel winners their prizes?
    A. Eight-year-olds.
    B. Harvard professors.
    C. Nobel Prize winners.
    D. Nobel Prize organizers.
    22. What did Charles Foster and Thomas Thwaites have in common?
    A. They shared the Ig Nobel Prize in Physics.
    B. Both their experiments centered on animals.
    C. They did their research in the same place.
    D. Both their experiments explored human senses.
    23. What does the underlined part “food searchers” refer to?
    A. Zebras.
    B. Horseflies.
    C. Handmade horses.
    D. White-haired horses.
