Whenever you walk past a cafe, you might be drawn in by the smell of fresh coffee. But the minute you try this dark drink you will regret it, because it tastes like bitter Chinese medicine.
Why does something that sn~ells so good taste so bad? Many people are interested in this, and now scientists say they have found the answer - it lies in our " second sense of smell" , according to The Telegraph.
" We have two senses of smell," explained Barry Smith:a professor of the University of London. " One is w-hen you breathe in things from the environment, and the other is when the air comes up to the nose and is breathed out through the nose. "
When we drink coffee, for example, the act of swallowing（吞咽）sends a burst of smell up to the back of our nose from the inside of the mouth. This wakes up the second sense of smell in our brain. But it is weaker and less sensitive to flavors. As a result, it gives us a completely different feeling.
In fact, the second sense of smell plays a big part in our eating expenence. It may be common sense that we smell through our nose and taste through our longu （舌头）.But the truth is 80 percent of what we think of as taste actually reaches us through our nose. Just hold your nose while eating and you will notice that your tongue can only catch a very small part of the flavor.
( )72. Why does something that smells good taste bad?
A. Because people only have little time to smell.
B. Because different people have different taste.
C. Because our¨second sense of smell" works.
D. Because people have both tongues and noses.
( )73. What's the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. Vl-hen we drink coffee, the act of swallowing will send a burst of smell.
B. The first sense of smell is weaker and less sensitive to flavors.
C. The second sense of smell will give us a completely different feeling.
D. The act of swallowing will wake up the second sense of smell in our tongue.
( )74. What does the underlined word”it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
． B．A burst of smell.
C. The second sense of smell.
( )75. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A．Our Tongue and Nose.
B. The Second Sense of Smell.
C. The Food Smells Good but Tastes Bad.
D. The First Sense of Smell.
Good and bad manners make up the social rules of a country. They are not always easy to leam because they are often written in books. Let's see some social rules in Britain.
In the past, Britain women didn't go to pubs（酒馆）because it was not considered good behavior for a woman. 76
Visitors to British often see British people wait in line in public places. It is considered impolite to get on a bus without waiting your turn. And if you don't wait your turn, the other people will probably complain（发牢骚）loudly. 77
In some countries“is considered bad manners to eat in the street. However, in Britain it is common to see people having a snack while walking on the road, especially at lunchtime.
British people might be surprised to see young children in restaurants in the evening, because children were not usually taken out to restaurants late at night in the past. 78 But now children are accepted in many pubs and restaurants.
In recent years many British companies don't allow people to smoke in their offices and restaurants. Smoking is also not allowed on the London underground, in cinemas and theaters and on most buses. 79 It is also considered bad manners
to smoke in someone's house without permission（许可）．
80 The British have an expression for following those¨unwritten rules": When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
