Teaching contents: Reading and writing.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Reading Practice  

  1. Task 1 Check the meaning of the words in Activity 1.

  2. Task 2 Read the passage about Stephen Hawking and number the paragraphs in the correct order and match the main idea of each paragraph, and then check the answers. (2,3,1/1,2,3)

  3. Go through the short passage and explain some of the new language items in it.

Step 2 Writing

  1. Task 1 Read the notes about Albert Einstein and give brief explanation.

2. Help the Ss to develop one or two pieces of information into whole sentence(s) as example.

3. Ss work in pairs to prepare for the writing. (Use the given information about Albert Einstein on P37 and think about the questions in Speaking on P38 in TB)

4. Talk about how to write a short biography with the help of the writing guidance on P50 in RB.

5. Read or show the sample writing for the students to follow. (To P123 in Teacher’s Book)

Homework:

  Complete the writing task and do some exercises in RB. (For Class 20, they can copy the sample writing in RB)

Tu Youyou

Tu Youyou is a Chinese medical scientist and educator. She was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China on 30 December 1930. She attended Xiaoshi Middle School for junior high school and the first year of high school before going to Ningbo Middle School in 1948. From 1951 to 1955, she attended Peking University Medical School and graduated in 1955.

After graduation, Tu worked at the Academy of Chinese Medicine in Beijing. She is best known for discovering artemisinin and dihydroartemisinin (青蒿素和双氢青蒿素), used to treat malaria, which saved millions of lives. Her discovery of artemisinin and its treatment of malaria is regarded as a significant breakthrough of tropical medicine in the 20th century and health improvement for people of tropical developing countries in South Asia, Africa, and South America. For her work, Tu received the 2011 Lasker Award in clinical medicine and the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She is the first Chinese Nobel Prize winner in physiology or medicine and the first citizen of the People’s Republic of China to receive the Nobel Prize in natural sciences.

Tu is now regarded as a representative figure of the first generation of Chinese medical workers since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
